It looks like someone said something funny to catch his attention, and he's been caught mid-retort.
Taken on the eve of his 38th birthday, this caught him mid-syllable; you can see his tongue pressed up against his teeth. His smile was wide enough to get all three of the dimples on his left cheek going, the muscles around his eyes tightened so that they pulled up those beautiful crow's feet at the corners of his eyes and the tops of his cheeks into crinkles of delight.
And how much do I love that single silver curb feeler that escaped Amy's careful hand? So much! It might sound odd, but that really was a driving factor behind me choosing this specific reference to paint. That and the smile, which is so infectious that I can't help but smile when I look at it, even though I know he can't see me.
